The Mongrel Mage, by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. Recluce #19. Beltur is one of my favorite Recluce protagonists, so I skipped ahead in my rereading project to start the three (or in a sense four) about him. I remembered most of the book except for the first big thing he does away from his home city - I knew someone went off into the grasslands for a while but didn't remember that it was Beltur. Anyway, Beltur was raised as a white (chaos) wizard by his uncle, a white wizard, then discovers after his uncle's murder (by their local ruler) that he's actually a black (order) wizard. He starts learning black wizardry from a black wizard in a different city, and this book covers much of his time in that city. Many of Modesitt's books feature characters involved in crafts, police work, and the military, and Beltur spends time doing all three. I especially appreciated that one of the main characters in the book (Beltur's mentor) is a gay man in a long-term relationship, and that this is treated entirely matter-of-factly. On to the next Beltur book.
