The Burning God, by R.F. Kuang. Poppy War #3. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been really dragging my heels about reading these books – the first part of the first book, in the military academy, is fine, but after that we’re plunged into so much horrific war and our point-of-view character is such an angry, emotional, intellectually shallow person, and it’s pretty hard to read much of it. I understand that our character, Rin, is inspired by Mao, and she does get a bit more thoughtful in the third book, but she just doesn’t have the maturity to deal with her reality very well. All that said, I found the ending rather brilliant and satisfying, and I’m actually somewhat tempted to reread them, now that I know what to expect at every point.
