Books. I read David Abram’s Becoming Animal, which was definitely worthwhile. For August, I’m going to try The Guns of August (Barbara Tuchman), but if I’m not enjoying/appreciating it, I’ll probably switch to that History of Beauty book I didn’t read last month.

Boxes. Still didn’t do anything with my old boxes. Maybe later in this month. I do need to make space in J’s garage so that he can finally resume parking his car in there, before the rain returns.

Better diet and digestion. My digestion wasn’t happy with me when I was sick earlier in the month, but I think that means I should be more prudent about my daily cup of frozen grape juice. I ate more fruit than usual this month (peaches especially!), and I also had refried beans at least four times.

The Physicians of Vilnoc, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Penric & Desdemona #9. This time Penric has to help solve a medical crisis – a new lethal disease is affecting far too many people in their city’s military fort. Although it was published in 2020, Bujold had already started writing it in 2019. Lots of work for Penric – and it speaks well of Bujold that she can make the story so interesting when so much of it is just doing the rounds day after day after day.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, by Philip K. Dick. This is the book on which Blade Runner was based, and it’s fascinating that it’s both much more complex and much easier to follow than the movie. I’d never read anything by Philip K. Dick before, and it was very impressive. I have to say, I don’t think ecology works in a way that would make this story possible, but as a thought experiment, it’s worthwhile. The main theme of the story isn’t ecology, anyway – it’s more about empathy.
