It’s still two weeks away from my heat pump replacement and, soon thereafter, the duct cleaning, but I have a lot to do. It’s also miserably hot in my house by the time I wake up. My current way of doing things is to move boxes, etc., in the hot house while dripping with sweat, until I’m too tired or too hot, then I shower, eat lunch, and spent the evening reading in J’s yard and then in his air-conditioned livingroom. I’m really not getting much work done, and I’m behind on anything involving my computer. The time I spend outside in the evening is so utterly lovely, especially with the usual evening breeze.

My current problem is how to reorganize my bedroom, which also functions as my office, given the many piles of papers and boxes of files and also the need to access the vent, which is underneath the bed. Do I move other furniture around so I can move the bed, while still managing to keep a path through to the bathroom, which also has a vent? (This room has a lot of furniture. In addition to the bed, there’s a dresser, a vanity, a side-table, a bookshelf, another set of shelves that could be a bookshelf but isn’t at present, a chair functioning as a computer stand, and… a piano.) Or do I plan to lift both mattresses off the bed and over to the side (from which I moved boxes today), so that the duct cleaners can stand in the bed frame to access the vent? I will probably experiment with the latter.

Rogue Protocol, by Martha Wells. Murderbot #3. (The first four Murderbot books are novellas, which is why I am rereading them so quickly.) This time our SecUnit decides to visit a space station to learn more about the evil company that tried to sabotage its clients in the first book. It meets a scientist who truly loves her "pet" robot, which is in some ways an emotionally difficult experience. Not as much happens in this book as the others; its main value is the ongoing storyline.

Good news – my guess was correct, it was the middle of the three bookcases along the western wall of my livingroom that was concealing the HVAC vent. And it also brought some humor into the process. I removed all of the books and went to pull it away from the wall, but in the 30+ years that we’ve had these bookcases some of the original stain soaked into the carpet, and it was stuck! J had to come over and tug and tug at it to get it free. Once it was no longer stuck, we slid it over in front of the leftmost bookcase, and it can stay there until they’ve cleaned the vent. Ajani likes the new space.
