A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver, by E.L. Konigsburg. It's the story of Eleanor of Aquitaine, very cleverly arranged, for younger readers. I was 11 when it was published, and I wonder that I didn't read it then, because I had certainly read a lot of other books about her. Maybe I looked down on it because the other books I'd read were written for adults? Anyway, our narrators are Abbot Suger (who had the first Gothic cathedral built, and I've been reading about him in architecture books), the Empress Mathilda, William the Marshal, and Eleanor herself. They're all sitting around Heaven in the 20th century waiting to see if Henry II will be let Up to join them.

Today I made some progress on two work projects, then when J. was at sword class I wrapped seven more gifts. I'm almost caught up on wrapping, but I'm still waiting for several more things to arrive for D. Frustratingly, one shipment has been sitting in a Portland suburb since Saturday; Amazon's latest update said it should arrive yesterday or today. Nope. But there are still several days to go.

Update next evening: Oddly, the tracking for that latter package claimed that they'd tried to deliver it today and failed, and that I'd have to pick it up at the post office. But there was no attempted-delivery slip in my mailbox; in fact, there was nothing at all in my mailbox, or in J's. I used the online thing to ask them to try again tomorrow...
