We all went to costume parties last night! D's friends had postponed their Halloween party, as the hosts had the 'flu last week. He went as Sans, a character from the Undertale game, and S. was Nagito from the Danganronpa games. She looked pretty, whereas he looked - in his words - "hideous." He was basically a skeleton in a sweatshirt and shorts, so he had to wear a white thing over his hair and a bunch of grease paint makeup. The photo he showed me was amusing, since of course he has a beard too. I thought he looked like a cute bear.

Meanwhile, J. and I went to his friend C's birthday party, which was at the Elk Horn Brewery. He was going for an Old West theme, and we were supposed to dress appropriately. J. looked great in all-black with a fedorar - he was a guy "from the Big City" coming in to take over. I bought a green shirt with rhinestones and wore jeans and a braid. A skirt seemed like too much trouble since it would also mean buying boots or other footwear that I'd never use again. I figured if anyone asked, I'd say I was a character from a Molly Gloss novel and not gender-conforming.

I was a little concerned about being part of a group that looked so Western, especially near campus, but I need not have worried. C's adult child, non-binary but with a beard, was dressed gorgeously as a dance-hall girl with pretty make-up and hair and great skirts. With that, surely it was clear to all that we were in costume (and not right-wingers).

C. had a toast with some kind of rye whiskey that was supposedly Doc Holliday's favorite, then we had a buffet with chili, ribs, chicken, baked potatoes, biscuits, and salad, then cake later on. Everything tasted good, but something sharply disagreed with me this morning, and I had to miss the visit by Silvia Moreno-Garcia to our public library, which I'd been looking forward to. I spent the afternoon reading in bed, instead, which was fine.

The Murder of Mr. Wickham, by Claudia Gray. Oh, this was fun. It's a house party, hosted by the Knightleys at Donwell Abbey, with all the main Jane Austen characters, several of the minor characters, and added children for some. I thought the author handled them all very well and made lots of sound choices. I've tried books that brought together characters from more than one Austen story before, but they were disappointing. If you like Austen fanfic, I highly recommend this one.
