Today, G. had his first lab meeting of the term. We met outside the student union building, which is how he's done the few in-person meetings since the pandemic started. (Most of them are on Zoom.) Only two of his grad students showed up, Sara and Meghan, but the four of us had a fine conversation.

Then we saw some students standing near another table. One of them had a sign, "Donuts for Dad Jokes," and another had two large boxes of donuts. Sara went over, told a joke about the calendar, and came back with a chocolate glazed donut. Then G. wanted one - but he didn't know what dad jokes are. He'd assumed they were jokes about dads. No, they aren't. We coached him, and had him listen to the response the students were making to others' jokes, an amused groan but definitely not laughter. So he set forth. First he asked them, just to be sure, that it wasn't supposed to be a joke about a dad. He was assured not. Then he did the knock knock joke about bananas, and then he returned to us with his prize. Later, as they headed indoors, I asked what group they were with. Catholic students, they told us, having some fun.

I haven't had much exercise for weeks, between the smoke-filled air and that illness, and today I probably overdid things... I walked a mile from my car to our meeting, then I went to the Design library and got three heavy books about cathedral-building, then carried them more than a mile back to my car, taking a detour to check out the street fair. Later I did deck-sweeping and mowing, and later still I did vacuuming, which included fixing the vacuum cleaner. I imagine it was all good for me, but I was pretty tired at one point.

(I realize that my regular readers include people who do very long walks regularly, and/or running, so you will not be impressed!)
