Today I felt basically okay, except for being weak and tired, so - after doing another negative covid test - I went to help J. with our cat-sitting day for Momo, who belongs to AA and DG, who are on the other side of the country. I kept my KN-95 mask on when I was inside, and I was only in the house for maybe 5 minutes. The rest of the time I was in the back yard, while J. spent most of an hour petting Momo. I watered a thirsty rhododendron and then sat down and ate a snack and read a while. It was like having my own private park.

After that, I finally got to buy some groceries. As I was parking my car, a guy parked near me with a whole bunch of literary bumper stickers, things like, "I'd rather be reading Flannery O'Connor" and "HOWL if you (heart) City Light Books." The latter is a famous San Francisco bookstore co-founded by the Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who passed away last year at age 101. (He'd been tried for obscenity for publishing Alan Ginsburg's "Howl" but acquitted due to the First Amendment.) The driver got out of his car and was also wearing a t-shirt with Yoda on it and something about the value of reading. Definitely a guy with a theme!

Later, I approached him in the store and told him I'd seen his bumper stickers, and when I was younger I once worked for a remainder book company in Berkeley where Lawrence Ferlinghetti would come in to shop. I remembered being amazed that Lawrence Ferlinghetti, of all people, would do the same sorts of things as any other bookstore owner. The guy seemed happy to hear my story and told me he works at Tsunami Books. I hope I'll recognize him if I see him again, as he's one of the very few middle-aged men I've seen wearing a mask lately who isn't in our immediate circle.

When I got home I read outside (still warm!) and cuddled with Ambrose, then managed to muster the energy to make meatballs, do the laundry, and run my dishwasher. Good stuff!
