Day 892: Sequoia story
Aug. 27th, 2022 10:05 pmOn our walk this evening, I was reminded that I've probably never posted here about Eugene's sequoia trees. There are two well-known species of sequoia, which are both very large conifer trees native to California - the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, and then the one we call sequoia, which is Sequoiadendron giganteum, and which originates in the Sierra Nevada mountains, like Sequoia National Park.
The sequoia isn't native to Eugene at all, but it grows very well here. There are fine specimens all over town, and the cool and interesting thing is that they're all the same age! Back in the 1930s, I think it was, some local bank offered to give away a sequoia seedling to anyone who opened a new account, and a lot of people must have taken them up on that.
Just now I looked online to see if I could find the details of the story, and I didn't, but apparently there's a drive going on to plant a lot more.
