Day 830: Bats!
Jun. 26th, 2022 11:57 pmWhile J was getting ready for bed, around 1:30 a.m., I went to the window of his other east-facing upstairs room to see if I could see Jupiter rising. Saturn was clearly visible to the southeast, and about ten minutes later Jupiter did make an appearance over the forested hills due east, but in the meanwhile I was surprised to see something quite different and unexpected. Bats! They were obviously going somewhere directly above the window, probably two of them, because they once left together. They passed the window ten times in just a few minutes, and they were behaving just like nesting birds.
A few minutes later, as I walked home down the driveway, I saw that there's a circular vent above that window, so I'd bet J. now has bats nesting in his crawlspace. I see online that mid-June to late July is nesting season for many bats, and I also see that in some states it's illegal to remove them during that period. Aha, that does include Oregon.
My first reaction was, ooh, cool, bats! Then I started thinking that I should accelerate Azalyn and Ambrose's visit to the regular vet, but after a while I remembered that they would have gotten rabies shots back in December when they went in for their spay/neuter surgeries. So of all the cats out there, they're the most protected. I don't know if any of the others are tame enough for the regular vet to handle them. Maybe Oberon?
