The early part of my afternoon was something of a hassle - two companies reported that shipments had been "delivered" to J, but they were clearly not on his porch. Past experience has shown that contacting FedEx is of little use, even when it's clearly their fault. We went all up and down the street, and to the houses with the same or similar number on the streets west and east of ours. Finally, a neighbor brought the packages - they were just across the street but behind a bush, so that we couldn't see them ourselves. Whew!

J. encouraged me to spend the evening at the Oregon Bach Festtival, since they were performing my favorite Beethoven symphony (#7). I wasn't able to buy a ticket online or over the phone, because although there were several aisle seats available, they each had an empty seat beside them and the system won't allow for creating single empty seats mid-row. I went to the venue an hour early and they had no problem in selling me the ticket I wanted, though.

Then I drove over to the Maude Kerns Art Center, a local museum and art school, to see the opening night exhibit of a juried show to share the work of local artists with the international crowd arriving in a few weeks for the World Track & Field Championship. My friend, neighbor, and long-time colleague Niraja Lorenz had one of her quilts on display, Strange Attractor #13. (If the combination of the phrase "strange attractor" and the name "Lorenz" rings a bell, yes, her father was Edward Lorenz, founder of chaos theory.) I am not seeing the entire quilt online, but here is a detail from when it won Best in Show at a Carnegie event. Ah, never mind, her website gives a much better idea.

Then I went back to the university to hear the Beethoven. One of the preceding works was a little too loud and I developed a bit of a headache. The Beethoven was too loud, too, but since I knew the work I could anticipate when the trumpet would enter, etc., which made it more manageable. There was a distinctly elegant Black woman sitting across the aisle from me and one row further - she looked vaguely familiar, and I could see that she was very popular. Many people were delighted to see her, offering to give her a better seat and/or introducing others to her. After I got home I remembered who she is - she's the dean.
