Today was the retirement concert for Marc Vanscheeuwijck (wow, I spelled it correctly!). The idea was that many of his previous (and current) students would join in various pieces, and the audience could come and go as they pleased. I was picturing some sort of ad hoc "jamming," but I guess that doesn't make sense for early music! Instead, there was a schedule with four major parts. The concert began at 7 pm and ended at... 11:36 p.m. I know, because I was still there. I actually left and went back to my car with two pieces left to go, then realized that the reason I'd gotten uncomfortable inside was just the heat, and now that I was damp from the rain, I could go back in and stick it out. The composers whose works we heard included Corelli, Uccellini, Frescobaldi, Pergolesi, Handel, Jacquet de la Guerre, Haydn, Boccherini, and Vivaldi. Some pieces had vocal parts, and others were instrumental only. Thankfully, there was food!

Unfortunately, today I woke with a migraine. When I woke up, despite the earplugs I always wear to sleep, I was hearing a really annoying sound that I assumed was coming from the supermarket. The funny thing was that when I took out the earplugs, it turned out to be just blackberry vines that had grown up high enough to be able to scrape the window, with the wind from the oncoming rainstorm. They were just the right pitch to get past the earplugs and make my head hurt. I promptly went outside and cut them down.

But then I had a headache, with hours to go before the concert, and it was important not to let it get any worse. I ended up with a great plan for how to pass the time - I figured I shouldn't look at any screens, and I didn't want to do much physical work, and I didn't want much daylight, so I lay in bed with the keyboard in my lap and did a bunch of writing with the screen turned off. Every so often I would turn it on and glance over to make sure it was still recording what I was saying. I did that for hours. And I ate a couple of meals, and then it was time to go!
