The Crowded Grave, by Martin Walker. Bruno Chief of Police #4. When I started this series, a few years back, the library didn't have this one, so I was stuck. Then, back in December when we had the snow, my neighbor brought me this one and the next to read, and I finally got around to it. They're fun, set in sensory-rich rural France. This one was fast-paced, with lots of relationship stuff - Bruno's casual local girlfriend, his true love who lives in Paris, and his difficult newbie colleague. It has some PETA activism and some Basque terrorism.

Our friends are continuing their house search, having learned today that they lost out on that other house to someone offering cash. My guess is it was a company, rather than individuals, which suggests that they intend to keep using it as a rental. Anyway! Tonight our friends' realtor sent a new possibility. This one's about the same price but considerably larger, probably in much better shape, and just a short walk from our house (about twice as far as T's house, so, about half a mile).

Thanks to the powers of the Internet, I learned that back in the 1950s (the decade the house was built), it was owned by a biology professor and his wife. The professor was one of the earliest and most thorough geneticists to study fruit flies. He and his buddy bought their first 100 fruit flies when they were high school sophomores, and the friend also became a geneticist, eventually winning a Nobel prize!
