Backing up LiveJournal

Thanks to a cross-post by arrctic, I've learned that Russia may cut itself off from the global Internet on March 11, which would mean goodbye to LiveJournal. I've been here for... 17 years at this point? Wow. Anyway, the post also gave links for how to back up what you have. I spent $18ish at Bookblogger.com and now have a pdf file of more than 4000 pages. I might do it again to get a docx file, but even if I don't get to that in time, it's reassuring to have the pdf.

And now I have to finally make up my mind about Dreamwidth. *sigh* But not this minute, as it's 3:27 am and I really want to sleep.

Day 722: Migration - or rather, parallel existence - achieved

Finally I have imported all my posts from LiveJournal to Dreamwidth, and now I have to figure out more about how it works in Dreamwidth-land. The importing process failed four or five times, or more, and when it managed to get the entries but failed on the comments to the entries, I decided, good enough. I've got all the comments up to yesterday in my nice new pdf.

I've chosen a new "theme" and I'll probably rename my journal, since the theme I liked most isn't green. Also, I am very much looking forward to using my much wider variety of icons - I had oodles and oodles on LiveJournal, but when I failed to pay last summer they limited me to a small subset, not of my choosing. I decided to go ahead and pay for six months of Dreamwidth so I can have all my icons. I downloaded them all from LJ, and over time I'll upload my favorites to DW. Icons are an important part of my self-expression!

Next up - helping J. migrate his LJ. He hasn't posted since 2008, but he does care about his old posts.
