Day 695: Lots of fog
Feb. 10th, 2022 11:52 pmI was delighted, when I woke, to find a day of thick fog, as it had meant I'd been able to get a good night's (and morning's) sleep. I then printed my new paper and read it, though I can see by the journal guidelines that I'm going to have to cut quite a lot of it.
Later, I drove to my office, after the sun had set. The fog muted the brightness of oncoming headlights, which was great. On my block, you could see the fog right in the street, but when I'd gotten a mile north it was much less thick. Once I approached the river, it was thick again.
Once in the office, I needed a coworker to sign something, and as it was 7 pm, the only person on our floor was the Belgian postdoc, whom I'd met the last time I needed something signed. We chatted a bit about our schedules, then - realizing her office has quite a large window, I commented on the fog. As it turned out, she was finding it a bit oppressive and was looking forward to warmer weather. She'd only arrived here in November and so she's only seen Eugene in the fall and winter.
Well. I mentioned canoeing in Alton Baker Park, and she was so excited that she started taking notes. And after I'd told her about the proximity of Hendricks Park and its rhododendron gardens, and how to get to the Ridgeline trails with the wildflowers, she was positively glowing. Apparently I had lit up her whole day!
