Every Friday we watch a movie with J's Discord group, the one for the gaming stream he follows, and usually we end up seeing something from when we were younger that we like, or something we've never seen but probably should have. Today's movie, however, was The Pagemaster, which I'd never heard of until recently. We were not impressed, but when J. looked at the Discord chat afterwards it turned out to have been a sentimental favorite for many of them.

Here's the story. Macaulay Culkin plays a young boy who's obsessed with accident statistics, but when he goes to run an errand for his dad he ends up in a big rainstorm that drives him into a library run by Christopher Lloyd (that is, a character played by him, but amusingly the character isn't all that different from the one Christopher Lloyd played in last week's Back to the Future). The boy has no interest in a library card. Nevertheless, Lloyd's character forces one on him, and the boy finds himself transformed into an animated character who has to make his way through three lands populated by characters from classic literature, accompanied by three animated books - one pirate-themed (voice by Patrick Stewart), one fantasy-themed (voice by Whoopi Goldberg), and one horror-themed (who's quite sweet, voiced by Frank Welker, the voice of Scooby Doo and his friend Fred). After completing all the necessary tasks, the child is now a fan of fiction and brave.

The acting was all fine, but the story was lame and the animation was blah except for some fairies made of lightning. I was also quite amused when a copy of Atlas Shrugged turned up in the Fantasy section, just displayed in passing.
