Remember Me?, by Sophie Kinsella. In this one, our heroine, Lexi, is out with her friends then slips and falls, waking up in a fancy hospital. But she's not in the hospital because she slipped and fell. No, she was just in a car accident, and she's forgotten the last three years of her life, everything since that night with her friends. Now she's living her dream life - she's much prettier, rich, successful at work, with a gorgeous husband. And yet... something's not quite right. Yet another fun chick-lit book for bedtime reading. Next I'm going to start on Kinsella's "Shopaholic" series... we'll see. Personally, the only shopping I truly enjoy takes place in bookstores.

I can't reasonably buy a copy of Berlyne's Aesthetics and Psychobiology (that is, it's a minimum of $187 on Amazon), but it's so old that it's in the public domain, and I've been saving the most useful passages to a text file for future reference. Some of the passages are longer than I want to type, so last week I scanned them at my office. I can then highlight and copy passages from the resulting pdf, with varying results. Sometimes it turns out like this:
The structures belonging to the arousal and de-arousal systems can
be activated in three difierent ways. First, they are responsive to substances
circulating in the blood. These include hormones secreted by
endocrine glands; the reticular formation can be mobilized by injections
of adrenaline, which adrenal glands pour into the blood stream in high
quantities at times of
But sometimes it's more like this:

Not optimal.

When I went back to the first 100 pages, naturally there were some longer bits there, too, but I don't want to drive to my office just to scan yet more pages I'd then have to spend hours cleaning up. So yesterday I scanned it on my home printer, but my home printer just makes images, not OCR-ready files. Okay, what free resources are there for converting images full of text into usable text?

I started with this image:

I tried https://products.aspose.app/ocr/ocr-to-pdf/jpg. It made a supposedly "searchable pdf," but it was not searchable, let alone copy-and-paste-able.

I tried some place I can't find anymore, which reduced the entire thing to about five nonsense characters.

I tried https://online2pdf.com/convert-jpg-to-txt. It took more than 30 seconds and yielded this:
.· ·· --··1· ···
"There arc, however, two problems 1hat l>eset a ll animal orga nisms."
"One is thac the information in the presenL \tin1ulus sicuation is unlikely to be sufficient. The conjc<1uenccs or the actions tlrnt could be performed rr1ay very well depend on distant cvcn.t$, or even on p:.ut or future events, that are not rc!lected in the s1imuli to which che sense orga ns have"
I tried https://www.ocr2edit.com/convert-to-txt, which gave me this - definitely an improvement, but too literal about the hard returns:
‘There are, however, two problems that beset all animal organisms.
One is that the information in the present stimulus situation is unlikely
to be sufficient. The consequences of the actions that could be performed
may very well depend on distant events, or even on past or future events,
that are not reflected in the stimuli to which the sense organs have
Then I learned that you can open a .jpg file in Google Docs, and if you do, you get the original image plus this:
There are, however, two problems that beset all animal organisms. One is that the information in the present stimulus situation is unlikely to be sufficient. The consequences of the actions that could be performed may very well depend on distant events, or even on past or future events, that are not reflected in the stimuli to which the sense organs have
Whee! Problem solved.

Today all I really did was to write a blog post, with a quick break to get J's deck/fence deposit to the post office before it closed. The smoke and haze went away, hurray, but I was so busy with cooking that I only got to read outside for about 5 minutes.
