Kate Martinelli is a detective in the San Francisco Police Department, and a lesbian, which was relatively unusual for a series heroine when King started writing these in the 1990s. There's more gritty realism in thetse than in the Russell books, so I've only read them once - they're kind of intense. I enjoyed the book, though the plot was a bit predictable - necessarily so, for a novella in this genre. It was great to spend time with these characters again. (It's also jarring to see King use the word "f***er," since she's so genteel.)
