Beginnings, by Laurie R. King. This is a new novella in the Kate Martinelli mystery series, the first book in this series since 2006. She's mentioned wanting to write more, but her publishers really want her to focus on the Mary Russell & Sherlock Holmes books.

Kate Martinelli is a detective in the San Francisco Police Department, and a lesbian, which was relatively unusual for a series heroine when King started writing these in the 1990s. There's more gritty realism in thetse than in the Russell books, so I've only read them once - they're kind of intense. I enjoyed the book, though the plot was a bit predictable - necessarily so, for a novella in this genre. It was great to spend time with these characters again. (It's also jarring to see King use the word "f***er," since she's so genteel.)

I am so tired right now and have been all evening. I imagine it's partly the exertions of yesterday's social event, catching up with me. Mostly, though, I think it's frustration. More estate management grr. )

At this point I'm in a good mood - thankfully my mood usually bounces back quickly - but I sure am worn out!
