The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi, second in a trilogy. I like these just fine, but it's all a bit contrived-feeling. Also I wouldn't care to read them to J. because they have more than a comfortable level profanity. Now I can read the sequel, which is called The Last Emperox, but I should note that a few days ago I learned that "emperox" is pronounced "emperoh."

Today was supposed to be the first day of J's new three-day vacation (he gets one of those approximately every month now), but yesterday he concluded that his increase in workload due to yet another coworker quitting meant he'd need to work today instead. Good thing he felt well enough.

I got very little done, really, although I feel better than I did on Monday - just somewhat wiped out. But well enough that I can read happily, which is good. Usually for my online Zoom meetings, I sit on the floor of J's bedroom (if not in my own livingroom), either of which is okay in terms of the background view for the camera and the noise level, but today I just kept the camera off and lay on J's bed with one of the blinds open, enjoying the way my oak tree looks in the breeze. I did that both for Science Hour and a couple of hours later for my weekly Beethoven class. It was nice. (On Monday I did Scientist Council with the camera off from my own bed, which felt downright decadent.)
