King Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard. This was his first book, I think, and so I read it first in my big 99¢ Kindle collection. My thoughts, hmm. The elephant hunting scene, though brief, was brutal, as was the big battle scene. I understand that Haggard is considered relatively less racist than other British writers of the era, and I could see why - there are noble and intelligent Africans - yet I found it sad that inter-racial intimate relationships were considered impossible from both sides.

I imagine I'll read more of the stories, but for this one, I do have to admit I preferred the Hollywood version with Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr.

I'd been looking forward to today's planned errands - delivering some things to my sister then picking up Italian food - but woke feeling nauseous and at times, dizzy. I don't have a fever or any COVID symptoms, but how would I have caught any other virus under these conditions? So maybe I ate something untoward? We spent the day home instead.

It really was lovely today, 70°! I did some work, and J. and I looked at his pathetically overgrown strawberry bed. I think we need to hire someone to dig it out so we can start over.
