Apr. 9th, 2020 12:02 amKing Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard. This was his first book, I think, and so I read it first in my big 99¢ Kindle collection. My thoughts, hmm. The elephant hunting scene, though brief, was brutal, as was the big battle scene. I understand that Haggard is considered relatively less racist than other British writers of the era, and I could see why - there are noble and intelligent Africans - yet I found it sad that inter-racial intimate relationships were considered impossible from both sides.
I imagine I'll read more of the stories, but for this one, I do have to admit I preferred the Hollywood version with Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr.
