Tonight's concert was so impressive, and the clarinets were the very best section, at least in the opinion of the woodwind coach, who should know. (I thought so too.) D. played the opening notes of the concert, for the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, then they did some selections from "West Side Story" in honor of Bernstein's centenary (which is in 2018 actually), then he was the principal clarinet for the last movement of Mahler's Third Symphony (not terribly interesting) and for the last movement of Sibelius's Second Symphony, a great crowd pleaser that I was humming for hours afterwards.

Unfortunately, although I'd arranged with his dad to get him dinner and have him here at 5:45 pm so he could get dressed and arrive on time, instead his dad delivered him at 5:55 pm without dinner, and D. didn't have the presence of mind to call ahead to have me cook something for him, so he ended up with just a bowl of rice and a cup of milk. We had lots of other food in the house but nothing suitable for a clarinet player to eat that close to a concert, I'm told. He was quite hungry and irritable. But he survived and ate four cookies from the reception and then I made him a proper meal when we got home.

Other people attending: J, R, D's clarinet teacher, and his girlfriend and her mom. My sister flaked out this time, but I bought her a DVD of the performance.
