J. and D. left this evening for Portland, so they can play in a Magic grand prix. I made a lovely risotto with artichoke hearts and a bit too much lemon juice, and I got caught up on The Shannara Chronicles, and then I started looking at the GP coverage pages online... and realized that I hadn't sent D. with a signed parental consent form. He's still a minor. Eep! I called J, who thought he could get away with signing for him... but what if he couldn't? What if D. won the $10K grand prize and then was disqualified because J's not his actual parent or legal guardian? D. and I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry, so I printed and signed the form and drove to my office to fax it to the hotel.

This was an adventure! First, the car windows were frozen over, but of course they thawed. Driving was easy with so little traffic at 11:20 p.m. (and no rain tonight), making that part a breeze. I had fretted all the way there about what to do about the billing code (as I haven't placed a long-distance call from the office in many years), so when I arrived I checked my AA's bulletin board and saw that the 4-digit number I would have guessed if necessary was actually the correct one. I then went to the fax room... but the machine was gone. Oops! I then remembered a memo about them deciding to get rid of all the fax machines except for one on the third floor. I went back to my office - and by the way it was utterly dark in most of the rooms and all the hallways, creepy! - and searched my e-mail inbox but couldn't find the memo. So I went to the IT help page and found that the third floor fax was in room 313. I set off for the third floor... but there was no room 313! By this time, D. was ready to go to the hotel desk to pick up the fax, and he called me as I was wandering around in the dark. I decided to check out the copier that I knew was in room 318, and lo and behold, there were fax instructions taped to the wall. I scribbled a cover page and tried to send a fax from the copier, D. went to the hotel desk, they gave it to him, and there it was, my maternal signature. Yay! Made me feel all glow-y inside. It's a mom thing.
