This afternoon, at one point I realized that since the weather was surpassingly lovely, I really should get outside and pick the apples from my apple tree. So I dashed back there with a box to put them in and set it down and started picking apples. After about 10 minutes, I noticed that there had been three deer in the yard with me all along, a doe and two good-sized fawns. They were being awfully placid for deer in a confined space with a human.

I made eye contact with one of the fawns and decided it would be fun to try to feed them, so I found a lower-quality apple in my box and rolled it across the lawn toward him. It was still maybe 5 feet from him, but he knew I'd done it and started sniffing around looking for it. It took a while, and I thought for a moment that Mama Deer would find it first, but then the fawn got it. Mama Deer wanted it, so I tried rolling another apple. I'm not a lot better at rolling than I am at throwing, which is, pretty bad, and the apple only got halfway there, so I bravely ducked my head down to avoid eye contact and walked over to it and then tossed it the rest of the way. They didn't seem to mind me coming that close, but I wasn't going to repeat it. I gave them a third apple too. At the end, they all three had their faces side by side, trying to eat apples together.

I felt pretty gleeful about having a successful interaction with the deer, but I did put my box of apples inside instead of leaving it on the porch... I bet there wouldn't have been any left in the morning if I had.
