Eclipse!

Today was the total eclipse, at 10:17 a.m. Everything went smoothly for the main expedition, J. and his friend driving north into the zone of totality. They left around 6:50 a.m. or so and took the route I'd sketched out for them, avoiding major traffic until the return. They ended up at an archery range at Camp Adair, which is between Corvallis and Monmouth.

I woke up about when they left, feeling nauseous and unable to get back to sleep, so I decided to go outside so I'd have something to compare the diminished light of the eclipse to. d. finally got up around 9:30 p.m. while the eclipse was well under way, and at 9:45 p.m. he headed to his girlfriend's house. I sat outside in my lawn chair, reading The Hippopotamus Pool (an Amelia Peabody mystery), and putting on my eclipse glasses to look at the crescent sun every few minutes.

We had 99.33% obscuration here, which really wasn't very much in terms of dimming the daylight, but it got noticeably cooler around 10 a.m., and then at 10:15 p.m. the light became kind of creepy and white. The sky was a bit hazy here (although clear up where J. and A. were), but it was still fun to put on the glasses and check things out. Soon after the peak of the eclipse, I came back inside and went to bed, sleeping several hours more (and waking up still nauseous, so I was actually sick and not reacting to lack of sleep per se). By that point, J. and A. were back and had themselves returned to bed. They'd taken some great pictures and had a great time! (They even got to see Mercury!)
