As far as East Asia goes, I've always been most interested in Japan, and second-most in Korea, with not much attention left over for China. The new Michael Wood series, though, has entranced me. As there is apparently no companion book available, I've gone to the libraries locally and acquired a big stack of books to learn more about China.
I'm especially interested in the Tang and Song dynasties. The Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) was a very cosmopolitan era, with lots of interest by the Chinese in the Muslim and Buddhist worlds, and a "Golden Age" of art and literature. The Song dynasty (960-1279) was China's "second great medieval era" (after the Tang), with many cultural and technological advances, including widespread education and many of the impressive inventions that predated their discovery in Europe by centuries, such as movable type.
