I keep learning new things from being on the board of the youth orchestras. One such thing is the institution of the "house party." People with money and interest are invited to the party; board members come to socialize; dinner and entertainment are provided; and the guests know to write a check at the end, if inspired to do so. I don't know lots of rich people to invite to the parties, but I can go and eat and converse. As it works out, they don't even really expect me to chat much with people I don't already know, though of course I show an interest in any who end up seated at the same table with me.

Today our board president hosted a house party at his home in the southwest hills of our city (about 2.5 miles west by northwest of me and considerably higher). He has a moderately fancy house and apparently a private second lot with a lovely lawn. There was a fireplace-like device in the bathroom! They served grilled chicken and ribs with salads and desserts. J. accompanied me, wearing the light aqua-colored linen shirt I got him for Christmas, for the first time. He was more nicely dressed than I was. We chatted mostly with the youth symphony conductor (who had recently been stranded in Russia when his backpack was stolen with the passport inside), and with the development director.

Meanwhile, D. has gone off to the coast for three nights with his girlfriend's family. J. started a humorous new 16-bit game called Cthulhu Saves the World and has now resumed Ori, and I am watching while compulsively eating raspberries.
