Byrdsong

Today I heard a lovely free concert downtown by the Byrdsong Renaissance Consort, which I’ve previously only heard at the Unitarian Church, their home base. They performed a bunch of pieces by Praetorius, Holborne, Playford, O’Carolan, and others, including one Holborne piece that was strikingly familiar – I’m guessing I have it on a David Munrow album.

Aside from one violinist, each of the five musicians played both string and woodwind instruments, and the director (who arranged many of the pieces) also played harpsichord. How fun it must be to be a serious musician who researches music and then plays regularly with a group of close friends (including his wife).

Oregon lost decisively to Oklahoma and did not make it to the Final Four. I lost interest in the fourth quarter and spent some time pulling ivy out of my native oak and the hawthorn beside it, a much more satisfying activity.

For dinner, J. and D. shared a pizza, and I ate a Greek salad, and J. shared his hard marionberry cider with me. In a bit we’re going to decorate Easter eggs.
