All State (day 1)
Jan. 15th, 2016 11:08 pmD’s now at All State, which is held here in Eugene. He passed the audition in the fall and was placed into the third-tier ensemble, Symphonic Band, along with 20? other clarinetists from around the state. Today R. dropped him off at the registration spot, where they rehearsed for seven hours then were taken to the Hilton, downtown, and checked into their rooms. Tomorrow they rehearse for nine more hours, then Sunday is the concert.
Although D. doesn’t know any of the other members of Symphonic Band, we do know one of his hotel roommates. I had assumed that the kids would be organized by ensemble, but this boy is in the Orchestra (the top tier) – he’s a senior at D’s school, also a clarinetist, and has the same clarinet teacher so we often see him at the beginning or end of his lesson. He’s friendly and nice, and probably an excellent role model.
Anyway, as for me – I had hopes of doing interesting things today. I planned to attend G’s lab, then look at the new office location with the youth symphonies director, then maybe go to a movie with J. Instead I slept a bunch. The Internet was down at my office for nearly six hours this afternoon (yikes), so I waited a bunch for it to be restored, then I read my e-mail, then I went to J’s and napped more there, including dreaming that J. was giving me a large black-and-silver puppy. I hope all this sleeping will help fix me up.
