After J. got off work, we met on campus – I’d wanted to go to a small concert in the art museum, and the museum café had some sandwiches J. might like on the menu, so we went there for dinner. Unfortunately, the café had run out of food, except for desserts and some sort of squash soup, so J. headed off to try to meet up with coworkers, and I went to the concert with food I’d brought just in case. Tonight’s group was À Due, a subset of the group that had performed at the mausoleum. À Due means there were two of them, but actually there were three, because in that era, the “continuo” (often a keyboardist) was always there but didn’t count. They were playing the baroque violin, the baroque trombone, and a chromatic sort of harpischord (e.g., she demonstrated that it had two different versions of D#).

It’s surprising how much music was written in the baroque era for violin and trombone! They were especially featuring works by Dario Castello. For my future reference, I’ll note that the violinist was Holly Roberts, the trombonist was Bodie Pfost (both grad students), and the harpsichordist was Margret Gries (professor, whom I’ve seen perform fairly often in the last few years).
