This evening we found out that D. is going to be in Junior Orchestra next year, having not advanced yet to Youth Symphony. I hope he doesn't mind terribly, but I don't really know his reaction since he's at his dad's for the evening and we only communicated about it via text. I suspect he had more immediate concerns, namely, that house is exceptionally full for Father's Day (I don't know why), and he was worried that he was going to have to share a bedroom with two small children who like to bounce out of bed very early in the morning. I hope he won't be too exhausted by the end of the day.
Anyway, he did work fairly hard on his audition piece, but he was sick that day, and also he'd spent the previous months focused on learning the alto sax, rather than studying the clarinet. Now he's taking lessons with an excellent teacher, and if he keeps with it, I expect his skills will be really strong by audition time next spring.
