Tonight was the concert for the three high school bands: the one D's in now, the high school jazz band (for which he auditioned last week), and the one he'll be in next year, which is the wind ensemble. That latter band was... wild. The students plan and conduct their spring concert all by themselves. So:
  • One guy conducted the "2001: A Space Odyssey" music with a plastic bone, while wearing an ape costume.
  • Then a girl conducted music from "World of Warcraft" (very nice).
  • This was followed by another girl playing a Brahms piano concerto while wearing the headpiece from a Big Bad Wolf costume.
  • Then we learned why one fellow had earlier accepted an award wearing knee britches, with bare feet. It was Bilbo costume! He conducted music from "Lord of the Rings," which featured a girl sitting there reading from the trilogy at one end of the stage, and nearly naked Gollum hunkered down and drooling at the other.
  • Finally, "Carnival of the Animals" included... a pair of lions parading back and forth; then a classical ballerina pirhouetting from one end of the stage to the other, followed by a brave young man in a t-shirt, copying her every move; then a two-person elephant lumbering about; and finally, as improv, a procession of the lions (one now in an old-fashioned wheelchair) slowly chasing the elephant while whomping it on the rear with its now detached trunk, as the ballerina serenely danced behind them.
D. was the elephant's "assistant" -- the people inside were his closest female friend and her joined-at-the-hip bff, and he helped them get into the costume, then came out and filmed their performance.

Crazy! I loved it.
