Jazz gig... check!

At the same time as my own hectic May, D. is having a hectic time too, with four concerts and two auditions in the space of three weeks, as well as the end-of-year academic workload. Tonight was the first concert, actually an unofficial "gig" in a local venue that has Wednesday night jazz, the lounge at the local Veterans' building. J. and I came and ate dinner, sitting at a big table with R, some unknown older man, my sister and brother-in-law, and a woman who turned out to be the wife of the kids' "producer," along with her own kids. R. hadn't heard the jazz band before and was quite impressed.

D. had a great time; he was still talking about how fun it was more than three hours later. I had a great time too, although I'd been unexpectedly nervous in the hours leading up to it, until D's solo in "Green Onions" was done, at which point I discovered I could relax. He does like the saxophone. He'd run a mile earlier in the day, 30 seconds faster than his previous best, so it was quite the long day for him.

We drove home under very black clouds, and it felt so cozy to take out my contacts and put on my fleece bathrobe and settle on the couch to finish The Boys in the Boat. Now I'm going to sit here and watch Perry Mason, then I'm going to resume rereading Gaudy Night. Tea, tea sounds good too.
