D's high school is one of the top high schools in the state, but now he wants to transfer to another high school that's apparently even better: the Eugene International High School (IHS). Most of his friends are in IHS, which lets you earn an IB, which is pretty cool! I would have been all about IHS at his age, but he didn't think it was his thing last year when it was time to apply, so now he can only get in if someone else has left and created a space.

Anyway, there are three IHS host schools, including the one he goes to right now, so he'd continue to have the same teachers and classes for math, science, band, Japanese, etc. IHS replaces the language arts and social studies curriculum; they get classes on worldviews and belief systems (the stuff I have my Ph.D. in), and even on epistemology! They also replace the non-class graduation requirements, which for his current school includes a big career-oriented "senior project" but at IHS involves a big research project on any topic of interest with a related 4000-word essay, and also 100 hours of community service, along with 50 hours of arts and physical activity.

I really have no idea what his prospects might be for getting in, but I do know that officially they allow transfers until the beginning of 11th grade, so if there isn't room this fall, he might still have a chance for the next year.
