The regional organization for which D. plays in Junior Orchestra has started a new group, Jazz Band, and naturally D. was happy to sign up. So far there are only five people, so the director was quite accommodating about including a clarinet – formal jazz bands at the high school level don’t allow clarinets unless the player can also play sax, although of course there are many famous jazz clarinetists. It was fun to arrive a bit before they’d finished, because I got to listen to them trying out a piece by Miles Davis, including quite a few parts where D. had the melody. When we got home, he played me his solo in a piece he especially liked, then he played it for his friends on the phone. I love how quickly he can play something he’s just been given. Apparently all of the kids were pretty good, so the director is going to bring them something more challenging next week.
