Today’s the day. The Natty. The Big One. Every retail transaction, in fact pretty much every local e-mail, today and for the last several days, has included the obligatory phrase, “Go Ducks!” Because tonight, our team aspires to win the first national championship playoff final in college football.
Oregon, in fact, won the very first NCAA basketball tournament, back in 1939. Against Ohio State, even. Maybe the Buckeyes want payback?
We are very grateful to Phil Knight for investing his Nike fortune to buy us this fabulous football team. Of course, they’ve all worked very hard, the players and the staff. We’ve done our part, too, we locals. We’ve made our community the nice sort of place that worried parents feel okay about sending their darlings off to. And we try, yes we try, not to grumble too much when we’re told we have to pretend that our team colors are… black and grey. Or by golly, silver and white. The uniforms do look cool.
We’ve never won a football game against Ohio State. But maybe, just maybe, tonight’s the night.
