She talks to cats!
Dec. 21st, 2014 11:31 pmLast night, around midnight, as J. and I were walking down the driveway to come back to my house for the Saturday night anime, I heard my friend Mahonna, the long-haired brown tabby next door, crying loudly in dismay. This was not her usual, “Come see me, me, me!” cry, rather, it was more like, “Ack, oh no, what a disaster has befallen me!” So I investigated and found her atop the 6' fence next door, soaking wet. Why did she feel compelled to sit on top of a fence in the pouring rain? I do not know, but she did, and she didn’t like the results. I pet her a bit and spoke to her, and she calmed down some. Maybe her family is away for the holiday.
This afternoon, when I got back from a quick trip to my office, I discovered that she had solved her dilemma. She was still on top of a 6' fence in the pouring rain, all right, but this time she was on top of my 6' fence, and snuggled up under the eave of my house, napping. She later woke up and spoke to me in her more chatty voice, and she was still there three hours later. Silly girl.
This evening, I was picking David up from D&D, and I told this story to C. and her son S, D’s friend. The part of the story he picked up on surprised me. “You talk to cats???” “Sure, of course I do.” This made no sense to him, and I’m fairly sure that he wasn’t just thinking that I thought cats spoke back to me intelligibly. A moment later, another kid’s mom arrived, and S. announced to her, “L---- can talk to cats!” I responded, “You can do it too, S--------. Look, here’s your cat Ezri. You could say something to her.” He looked down at Ezri, baffled, paused, then shook his head and said, “....No.” Come to think of it, I can’t remember anyone in their family ever talking to their cats, actually. This strikes me as bizarre! Maybe I talk to more animals than most people would (deer I encounter on walks, for example), but I can’t imagine not talking to my own cats.
