Visiting my mom

Today we visited my mom for her birthday, which will be on Tuesday. As I’ve mentioned before, she lives in a memory care facility, so she won’t remember on Tuesday that I visited today – but then, she wouldn’t remember on Tuesday afternoon if I’d visited her on Tuesday morning, so I just visit when I want to. Today she was in a so-so mood and not as excited to see me as she’s been before, and she didn’t retain who I was for very long. I’d brought her a blueberry-peach smoothie from Laughing Planet, and she wasn’t much interested in that either. She was in a rhyming frame of mind, repeating things back to me and then rhyming them with something else.

She knew the date of her birthday but not that it’s coming up, nor how old she was going to be. When I told her 81, she commented that that was old. The lady next to her was much sharper mentally, at least today, and told us her own birthday is July 4th, 1918. Both born on holidays.
