D. had a science class assignment to bring in a suitable stick for creating a “bow drill,” for starting a fire. We ended up lopping off the main trunk of a volunteer big-leaf maple that’s growing much too close to the house (as in, just a few inches from the foundation of the garage). I know I should cut the whole tree down, but killing trees is such a hard thing to do! Ethically, not physically, I mean. So I feel better that it’s for an educational purpose.
Anyway, there’s still a substantial part of the tree left, but D. now has a stick that’s about 2' long and 1" diameter, which he can take to science class tomorrow. I do hope it wasn’t an April Fool’s assignment.
