Snow and ice consequences
Feb. 9th, 2014 08:39 pmThe good news: Unlike much of my neighborhood, our house still has power. This is a very good thing. And the roads are driveable – very slushy, but entirely driveable.
Also, my car seems fine, although D. had left a door ajar the last time I drove it, such that the interior light was on for hours until the neighbors called and told me. It would have been a real pain to get AAA to come and help me, in this weather, or to get it out to the street for jump-starting.
The bad news: My poor oak tree! Its trunk is split, about 8' above the ground. What with all the hundreds of fallen trees around town, I don’t know if I can get a tree guy here in time to save it, if such a thing is even possible.
And worse news: The main sales greenhouse at R’s nursery has collapsed, and he suspects that it’s not covered by insurance. He doesn’t know if he can even keep the business going, and he has no Plan B for income.
Stressful! Anyway, now we’re sitting around quietly. I just subjected D. to a documentary about Ken Kesey, for his novelist project, and he went over to the computer to do some creative writing. Sorin wants to chew the velcro strap on the laptop cable. I want to relax...
