Back ages ago, I used to write brochures for the Electric Power Research Institute on energy-saving technologies, but that was a long time ago, and until last week I had no idea that standard incandescent bulbs were being phased out. I rather like them. I do like the idea of saving lots of energy and not having to replace the bulbs so ridiculously often, though, so I’m considering it something of an adventure to check out the alternatives.

I’m rather picky about lighting. Specifically, I don’t want it very bright in my house... I guess that’s not a common perspective, but it makes me happier to have it relatively dim. Many of the fixtures have a place for two or three bulbs, but I make do happily with just one. I also have several fixtures that let me dim them along a continuum – those are nice.

Anyway, the “twisty” CFL bulbs at 13 watts are supposed to be a replacement for the 60-watt incandescents, but a closer look at the packages says the CFLs provide 900 lumens, vs. about 700 for the incandescents. Again, this is probably supposed to be a bonus... but now I find myself shopping for the apparently elusive 11-watt CFLs. I did buy a 9-watt and a 10-watt to try out. D’s bathroom has the 13-watt bulb, which seems a tad too bright to me. I guess either I’ll avoid it until I get used to it, or I’ll move it to the garage or somewhere else that I seldom go.

(It rained nearly all day today. It was great! I could breathe so nicely!)
