Agendas

People have ideas for my kid. J. wishes he wanted to do math contests, since he himself had such a great time with them in high school. D’s more or less rejected this, though he does embrace J’s Magic hobby full-heartedly. I’m glad he’s into formal music, and I loved that he was going to write a novel one summer, not that that actually went anywhere.

Now today, out of the blue, his best friend’s mom came up with this plan she’s tremendously enthusiastic about – she wants D. to become a coxswain for the crew team she wants her son to join next year. She’s started trying to sell me on the idea. Apparently he’s perfect because he’s “light-weight, relatively cerebral, and respected by the other boys.” Also it would get her son more firmly committed to the crew idea, which has been her dream for him ever since her own crew days, apparently, or at least since he was born.

I dunno. Mayyyyyybe. It might well conflict with extra-curricular band and/or Magic, because there’s lots of practices and lots of trips. And it’s certainly an idea that’s never occurred to us before.
