We had strangely cool weather today, all clouded over and even a bit dark. I remembered that the bees and wasps stay dormant on days like that, and that meant I could pick a whole bunch of blackberries without having to pay any attention to pesky buzzing bugs. Yes, those stalks I’d cut all the way to the ground in the winter have burst forth in a grand, lush thicket of thorny vines that now completely fill the area behind the house again, but this is the week that I don’t mind. Blackberries are the one crop I can reliably grow in my garden, with no effort on my part whatsoever.
