My first “Gala”
Oct. 22nd, 2010 11:48 pmToday was a big day for the place I work, which is a great place to work, and we celebrated. The afternoon event was okay (though loud), with pretty good food, and research posters to read, and some people I hadn’t seen in many years.
The evening 50th Anniversary gala, at the Hilton ballroom, well... It was fun to dress up, but the event really was for couples, who were mostly seated at tables, and I felt awkward. Fortunately for me, G’s wife had stayed home, and he sought me out and spent about half an hour chatting with me. He’d disappeared after the interminable dull speeches, though, and I never did find Z. nor PY. I chatted with Lew, with Larry M, with Liz T, and with Erika, and I ate, hmm, a piece of gouda and two spring rolls? But other than the conversations, I was really, really bored.
So the odds that I’ll go to tomorrow’s Regency Zombie Ball on my own, not knowing anyone at all, are looking increasingly slim. Update: Non-existent; it's been cancelled.
