Today’s football game was extra-exciting, not the least because undefeated (#9) Stanford may have been the Ducks’ greatest challenge this year before the bowl games. Stanford was Oregon’s only conference loss last year, and as a Cal alum, of course, I can easily muster up anti-Stanford sentiment.
Oregon’s first drive went well, until they were limited to a field goal... but then Stanford turned each of its first four possessions into touchdowns, and two of those possessions were on unfortunate, disappointing Duck turnovers. Their 21-3 lead was disheartening. In the second quarter, Oregon’s offense regained its focus, and then at halftime they made some really effective adjustments to the defense, stopping all further scoring on Stanford’s part!
Final score: Oregon 52, Stanford 31!
(One thing: Twice Stanford faked injuries to create an extra time-out. I guess Oregon's no-huddle offense was getting to them. Each time, the player lay on the ground nursing his foot/ankle, and the trainers fussed over him a while, then he limped off the field... and 30 seconds later ran right back into the game, all fine again. In other words, a legal form of cheating.)
