This icon is still pertinent - our neighborhood seems to be full of nonchalant deer lately. At one point I had to stop the car to wait for one to finish crossing the street; later, elsewhere, D. and I pulled up alongside one that was grazing on roadside weeds and quite indifferent to us.

This evening we watched the first half hour of The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy, a fine Mexican film from 1960. Very funny. To prove his theory about hypnosis and past life regression, a psychologist loots an ancient temple, only bothering to bring back one of the two sacred items guarded by the sacrificed Princess Xochi, so he has to make a second trip. This time, Xochi's lover Popoca (who had been buried alive, ergo not precisely a mummy) follows them and kidnaps the psychologist's wife so he can replicate the sacrifice of his beloved (where's the logic in that?). The woman is not at all traumatized, and later in fact they rely on the mummy Popoca to arrive in time to save them from the evil Dr. Krup. He does so, tossing the wicked scientist into a pit of rattlesnakes conveniently located right outside his laboratory. Haven't seen the robot yet.
