Horticultural Sisyphus

I've managed to dig out about two-thirds of the blackberry vines that have been growing among our rhododendrons (see foreground):


It's seven or eight full-sized thorny plants, 4-10' tall/long, plus a half a dozen little ones. Why so many? They're emigrants from the other side of the fence.
