For the first time in its relatively long history, the Oregon-Oregon State rivalry game, aka the Civil War, was fought for the right to play in the Rose Bowl. Oregon hasn't been to the Rose Bowl in 15 years, which seems like a long time, but Oregon State hasn't gotten to go since I was 3 years old! D. and his classmates sure got worked up about the game at school, and all around town it felt like a holiday as we collectively waited for 6 p.m.

R. and I have followed both teams for years - they're both good now, lots of fun to watch, and I'd be happy to see either in the Rose Bowl. Today I ended up rooting for the (Oregon) Ducks, except whenever the (Oregon State) Beavers did something great, then I was excited on their behalf. The game was very engaging, and people who weren't familiar with either team would probably have enjoyed watching it - the lead changed hands at least five times, and there were surprising plays, and lots of excellence all around.

So now the Ducks will play Ohio State on New Year's. I hope the Beavers will make it to the Rose Bowl soon too, and that they get an excellent bowl game this year to showcase their talent.
