Our strategy is to engage his competitive nature by getting him into the school district's science fair.
So after tossing around a few other ideas, he finally decided he wanted an ant farm. I am skeptical, considering how weirded out he was about the tiny ants in the bathroom last month, but of course I have to encourage enthusiasm where I find it, and today I went out and bought the kit. In 2-6 weeks, our ants will arrive, and then the fun will begin. I've read about lots of experiments we can do with them. Also he's invited his buddy SS to be his partner, which should really help with the motivation.
