Judy Holliday
Feb. 17th, 2008 08:49 pmBorn Yesterday is one of my favorite movies; I watched it again last night. I love Judy Holliday. Her character is a prototypical dumb blonde, a gangster's girlfriend, who is tutored in civics by a handsome journalist and ends up turning the tables on the gangster.
There's a classic story that when she was called before the House Unamerican Activities Committee, Holliday was able to avoid incriminating herself and her friends as Communist sympathizers... by using her dumb blonde persona so that the committee would go easy on her and then give up. It's said that her actual IQ had been measured at 172.
Also today we watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which we hadn't seen before. What an abrupt ending! (I'm sure seeing a lot of Washington, DC, architecture in black-and-white this weekend!)
