The "horrid" novels
Jan. 24th, 2008 08:51 pmAfter watching the new Masterpiece Theatre dramatization of Northanger Abbey, a very funny Austen novel that parodies Gothic fiction, I'm reading the book for maybe the fourth time. This time, I'm very curious about the books Catherine reads, the so-called "horrid" novels. Have any of you read any of these?
I see that Mrs. Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho is available online; this site also has Fanny Burney's Evelina and Maria Edgeworth's Belinda, as well as works of more literary stature.
